The magic of perms

Are you considering getting a perm but have a few questions swirling in your mind? Whether you have short, barbered hair and want to add instant texture on top, or you have long locks and you’re dreaming of a soft beach wave, there is a perming technique to suit everyone.

Firstly, think about the type of curl or wave you would like to go for. Find some inspiration images and screen shot them to take with you to your consultation. Check out some of these curl and wave looks from Haug London Haus as hair inspiration. Note these are not all perms, but ideas for curl shapes that can be achieved with perming.

Here are some of our most asked perm questions answered by our in-haus perm specialist, Siobhan Haug to give you an idea of what’s involved in perming and if its right for you.

What is a perm?

A perm, short for permanent wave, is a chemical treatment that adds curls or waves to your hair. It involves applying a solution to break down the hair's natural structure, followed by reshaping it using rods or rollers. The result? Gorgeous, long-lasting curls!

Who can get a perm?

Perms are suitable for most hair types, but it is essential to book a consultation first to determine if your hair is in good condition for the process. Our specialists will assess your hair's health, texture, and previous hair history to ensure the best possible outcome. As a guide, if your hair has had lightner in it previously we say a perm can be done on hair with u a maximum of 30% of lightener that is evenly distributed throughout the hair.

How long will a perm last in my hair?

The longevity of a perm depends on various factors, including your hair's natural growth cycle and how well you care for it. On average, perms typically last between 2 to 6 months. However, keep in mind that as your hair grows, the perm will gradually loosen, resulting in a more natural look.

Will I be able to style my permed hair?

Absolutely! Permed hair offers versatility when it comes to styling. What it won’t do is give you a bouncy blow dry effect, you will still need to apply product and style your hair but the perm will help you do that and allow the style to hold much longer then it might do otherwise.  We will teach you how to style your new curls to create the affect you want. It’s also important to use heat styling tools sparingly and apply heat protectant products to maintain the health of your curls.

I have short straight hair that I struggle to style, I want a perm but not a tight curl, is this an option?

Our perming techniques are MADE for you! As strange as it sounds, a perm doesn’t have to mean curls, we can use our methods to give texture and soft movement to otherwise very straight hair.

How should I care for my permed hair?

To keep your perm looking its best, follow these care tips:

- Use sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners specifically designed for curly hair.

- Avoid excessive brushing, as it can disrupt the curl pattern.

- Apply leave-in conditioners or curl-enhancing products to keep your curls hydrated and defined.

- Protect your hair from excessive heat and sun exposure, as they can cause damage and fade the perm.

Will it damage my hair?

Our professional perm products create well-conditioned curls that are supple and soft. The home and aftercare routine we recommend for you during your appointment is really important to embrace as this will look after the condition of your hair and prolong the longevity of your perm.

What perms are trending right now?

Beach wave perms, Texture perms, Volume perms and Spiral perms are among our most requested looks right now.  Perming can have a magical effect on your hair, book a consultation with our perm specialist and find out if its right for you.
